Arson Blog Stop

Arson, thanks for joining us today:

Yeah, no problem.

Why so glum?

I’m not.

You look a bit off.

Well, my life’s kind of off. I’ve got a Grandmother who can’t make up her mind whether she loves me or doesn’t love me. A boss who’s hell-bent on inflicting torturous work schedules. I don’t exactly fit in the mold, you know?

I know what you mean. Why is that?

Are you serious? Let me show you.
Pause, as Arson lights his palm.

Whoa. I’ve never seen someone create fire like that.

Yeah. Wicked, right? I don’t know why or how it started. It just does .It’s something inside me that comes out. When I’m pissed or afraid or wanting to let all hell break loose. You ever feel like that?

Sometimes. A lot of people do, I’m sure.

Yeah, but when they’re angry, they don’t let fire out.

We all let fire out in different ways, Arson. Don’t beat yourself up too badly. Why don’t you tell us a little bit about your childhood.

My childhood? Funny. Isn’t a whole lot to tell. I mean, no one’s life is perfect, I get it. I just wish I didn’t have mine. Look, there was an accident seven years ago. We were playing with firecrackers and someone got hurt. I’m still carrying the regret from what we did. I didn’t mean to do it. The fire just sort of came out and I lost control. I was just a kid.

Came out?

Yeah, it just sort of happened. The fire. Look, can we talk about something else?

Sure. What is it that you hope to find in life? What is your purpose?

That’s a big question. I guess the same as anybody else. I just want to be normal. I just want to be real. It’s hard when you start fires with your thoughts to be either of those. As far as purpose…I don’t know. For the longest time my purpose was taking care of Grandma, keeping my secret hidden. Now it’s Emery.

When did you first know that she would be your purpose?

I tried to help her. Help her wrecked family. Man, it seems everybody’s got one. I figured I could fix her, you know, the way I couldn’t fix myself. She’s so beautiful. She’s so unique. Sometimes you just know beauty when you see it. Sometimes it’s just staring you right in the face and you can’t do anything but bend to it.

Have you ever felt this way about any other girl?

Before Emery? There was one girl. Mandy Kimball. I thought she was an angel when I was kid. Even a few months ago. I would have done anything for her. I thought I loved her. I was just corruptibly in love. It wasn’t real. Emery is. Emery makes me feel like I’m something different. Not a freak. Not some wimpy kid with no life. She’s real cool. She changed everything. Never thought someone like her would come into my life. Strange, huh?

Well, people can change a lot of things. Do you think “normal” people will have a change of heart about, you know, people like you, after they’ve read your story?

People like me? You mean, freaks? Shrug. As far as I know, there is no one like me, lady. I mean, have you ever met anybody else like this?

No.

Me neither. I wish there were somebody else. But then again, that would mean they’d feel like I feel, and I wouldn’t wish that on anybody. As far as public perception. Who knows? Only time will tell. Right now, my fire power, ability, whatever you want to call it has gotta remain a secret.

But what if you used this ability to help people? What if you could be a hero?

Fire destroys, lady. I don’t know if someone like me can be a hero.

But it doesn’t mean you should stop trying. Thanks for stopping by, Arson. You’re cooler than you think.
