The Education of Bet

By Lauren Baratz-Logsted

Summary: Bet is sixteen, very intelligent, but only knows as much as her limited education will allow. In Victorian England, girls aren't allowed to go to school.
Will is also 16, and though not related by blood, he and Bet act like brother and sister. In fact, they even look like brother and sister. And though they're both raised under the same roof, by the same kind uncle, Will has one big advantage over Bet: He's a boy, and being a boy means he isn't stuck in the grand house they call home. He gets to go out into the world--to school.
But that's not what Will wishes. He wants to join the military and learn about real life, not what's written in books.
So one night, Bet comes up with a plan. She'll go to school as Will. Will can join the military. And though it seems impossible, they actually manage to pull it off.
But once Bet gets to the school, she begins to realize the education she's going to get isn't exactly the one she was expecting.

My Thoughts: I'll start off by saying I'm not a big fan of historical romance. Every once in a while I'll run into one that sounds interesting and I'll give it a chance. I previously read Crazy Beautiful by Lauren and the premise of this one sounded interesting, so I gave it a try. I'm glad I did. We meet Bet who was taken in by Will's grandfather when they were just kids. Bet's mother died when Bet was just a kid and Bet was to be left as an orphan. Bet and Will grow up together. Will has went from one school to another because he tends to get into trouble while Bet stays home with the grandfather and reads to him and helps around the house. Bet and Will decide to spice it up a little bit. Will wants to join the military so Bet goes off to school as him. They look so much a like they can pull off. Bet gets to the school and it is nothing like she thought it would be. She also has a male room mate who can I just say is hot! I won't go into too many other details. This book was really good. What happens to Will and Bet? Do they pull it off? What about Bet and the roommate since he thinks she's a guy? This book was full of surprises, good and bad.

Overall: I loved it. It was so good. I even loved the historical angle. I liked Bet and Will from the beginning. Her roommate took her in (thinking she was Will) and I instantly fell for him. He was generous and oh so charming. I suggest you read this!

Cover: Its cute. The cover makes it look historical yet mysterious since we can't really see her face.

What I'd Give It:

I have to admit that I'm also not a huge fan of this kind of genre, but your review makes this book sound so interesting, that I'll give this one a try.
