A Match Made In High School Contest

by Kristin Walker

Summary: When the principal announces that every senior must participate in a mandatory year-long Marriage Education program, Fiona Sheehan believes that her life can’t get any worse. Then she marries her “husband”: Jerky jock Todd, whose cheerleader girlfriend, Amanda, has had it in for Fiona since day one of second grade. Even worse? Amanda is paired with Fiona’s long-term crush, Gabe. At least Fiona is doing better than her best friend, Marcie, who is paired up with the very quiet, very mysterious Johnny Mercer. Pranks, fights, misunderstandings, and reconciliations ensue in an almost Shakespearean comedy of errors about mistaken first impressions, convoluted coupling, and hidden crushes.

My Thoughts: When I first saw the title of this book I was thinking to myself, "Oh yes, this should be interesting; my kind of book!!" I loved the whole premise of this! We meet Fiona who is in love with Gabe. Gabe doesn't really even know she exists. We meet Marcie who is Fiona's best friend. On the first day of senior year they find out they will be paired with a marriage partner for the whole year! Of course Fiona gets stuck with Todd, the jerky cheerleader whom she can't stand. Marcie gets Johnny Mercer who is a quiet bigger type of guy. And Gabe gets Amanda (Todd's girlfriend). From the very first conversation between Todd and Fiona, you can tell how much they despise each other. I won't give away the whole plot but this book is full of so many surprises you won't see half of them coming. There were a few I had a feeling they were going to happen but in the back of my mind, I was thinking to myself, "please don't." So when they did, my mouth would drop open a bit! Todd and Fiona are out to get each other, they do not want to be partners so they start playing pranks on each other. Funny and amusing tricks! This book was so much fun. Between the pranks, the realizations, the twists and turns, it was a thrill ride that I'm glad I was on!

Overall: Loved it. Thinking back to high school, I can remember how embarrassing it would have been to have to have a marriage partner for the whole year. Torture, right? hehe. This book is a great book to read if your in the mood for laugh out laugh moments. The ending surprised me a bit, but honestly I liked how it worked out and who ended up with who.

Cover: Love It! It just fits, doesn't it?

What I'd Give It:

The best book of 2009 that I read was probably The Dark Divine. There were many, I loved The Pace and I also just read You are so Undead to Me & Cracked up to Be recently and all of those were great as well. Today I finished Jessica's Guide to Dating on the Dark side and while it wasn't as good as the others mentioned, it's definitely close.

I have a hard time narrowing anything down, some call it indecisiveness.... All were great books!

This is an awesome contest and if you liked this book so much, then I am sure that I will as well.

The best book I read last year ('09) was the Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan. I have loved Greek mythology since I was a little girl and it was so much fun to read a book that not only had TONS of Greek mythology but had it in a modern days setting! I love that Mt. Olympia was set in NY and that Hades rued under L.A. I'm looking forward to the 2nd book in the series.

I like the idea behind this book. The high school here makes everone take a personal finance course so they will know how to balance a checkbook and do everday financial things so this idea would probably show a lot of kids that marriage is a lot of responsibility.
