Sweetheart Of Prosper County

by Jill Alexander

Summary: Almost-15-year-old Austin Gray is tired of standing at the curb and watching the parade pass her by. Literally. She decides this is the year she’ll ride on the hood of a shiny pickup truck in the annual parade, waving to the crowd and finally showing the town bully that she’s got what it takes to be the Sweetheart of Prosper County.

But far from simply being a beauty contest, becoming Sweetheart involves participation in the Future Farmers of America (FFA), raising an animal, and hunting or fishing. Austin will do almost anything to become Sweetheart, and has the support of her oldest friend, Maribel, her new FFA friends (including the reigning Sweetheart, and a quiet, cute cowboy), an evangelical Elvis impersonator, a mysterious Cajun outcast, and a rooster named Charles Dickens. If only her momma would stop overprotecting her, and start letting Austin live her own life. But Austin can’t move on until Momma moves on, too—and lets the grief of losing Austin’s daddy several years before out into the open.

My Thoughts: This was a cute fun story! We meet Austin who is an ordinary girl like you and me. She has hopes and dreams. She just wants to be normal. She lost her daddy when she was young and thinks that if she had a daddy people would leave her alone. She is sick of being picked on by Dean and she figures the only way for that to happen is to become the Sweetheart in the parade. We've all had our Dean's in our life. You know, those annoying boys who liked to pick on us, who made fun of everything we did, who wouldn't get off our case! Austin needs an animal so she picks out a rooster named Charles Dickens. This book is one of the cutest happiest books I have ever read. I especially loved the Matthew McConaughey reference on page 31. Does Austin win and become sweetheart? How is Charles Dickens doing? Does Dean finally leave her alone?

My Favorite Paragraph: The rooster knocked over Momma's autographed picture of Matthew McConaughey, which the actor had personally given her when he passed through town and needed a new hinge for the screen door of his trailer. He came in the store shirtless, and Omma tripped over herself getting him a pack of hinges.

Overall: Cute and Fun! I recommend it!

Cover: Sweet cover. Love the rooster.

Nothing Like You

By Lauren Strasnick

Summary: “You think he’s yours but he’s not, I thought. You think he’s yours but really he’s mine.”

When Holly loses her virginity to Paul, a guy she barely knows, she assumes their encounter is a one-night stand. After all, Paul is too popular to even be speaking to Holly, and he happens to have a long-term girlfriend, Saskia. But ever since Holly’s mom died six months ago, Holly has been numb to the world, and she’s getting desperate to feel something, anything—so when Paul keeps pursuing her, Holly relents. Paul’s kisses are a welcome diversion, and it’s nice to feel like the kind of girl that a guy like Paul would choose.

But things aren’t so simple with Saskia around. Paul’s real girlfriend is willowy and perfect… and nothing like Holly. To make matters worse, she and Holly are becoming friends. Suddenly the consequences of Holly’s choices are all too real, and Holly stands to lose more than she ever realized she had.

My Thoughts: We are introduced to Holly who starts having a secret relationship with Paul but Paul already has a girlfriend named Saskia. We are also introduced to Holly's guy friend. Paul makes Holly feel good, wanted even. She cares about him and has real feelings for him but he is still with his girlfriend and doesn't want to hurt her by breaking up with her. More or less he wants both of them. She seems to have somewhat low self esteem and puts up with it for a while. She figures at least she can "kind of" have him this way. Honestly from the get go, I liked her guy friend and I wanted her to be with him. I wasn't really fond of Paul. He was a bad boy and I felt like Holly deserved better, someone who appreciated her. I could really feel like I was in Holly's shoes and I felt confused for her. I just wanted Holly to be happy. Does Holly end up with Paul? Does he dump his girlfriend? Does he keep pressuring her to be with him? What happens to her guy friend? What happens to Saskia?

Overall: I really enjoyed this one. When it was over, I wanted to keep reading! I could definitely feel for all the characters. I really enjoyed Holly and felt like I knew her and she was my friend. I wanted to sit with her and try to make her feel better.

Cover: The cover is pretty. I love the orange and the dress.

Living Dead Girl by Elizabeth Scott

Summary: When Alice was ten, Ray took her away from her family, her friends -- her life. She learned to give up all power, to endure all pain. She waited for the nightmare to be over.

Now Alice is fifteen and Ray still has her, but he speaks more and more of her death. He does not know it is what she longs for. She does not know he has something more terrifying than death in mind for her.

This is Alice's story. It is one you have never heard, and one you will never, ever forget.

My Thoughts: Elizabeth has done it again! She needs to write faster though because I'm almost through all of her books and I want more dangit! We are introduced to Alice and the details surrounding her abduction. She was only 10 when she was taken by Ray and she was only his second victim. He tells her he loves her and that this is the way its supposed to be, she belongs to him. If she runs away, he'll go hurt her family. She longs to get away from him, far far away. She is tired of everything he puts her through. This book is a quick devastating read. It is heartbreaking in so many ways because the fact of the matter is, this happens in real life. Kids get abducted, kids get abused, kids get hurt. Its just not right!!! I could totally feel for Alice and there were a few times during the story I wanted to run away for Alice! Ray starts looking for a new "girl" with Alice, and Alice fears her time has come to an end. She's 15 now and not what he is "looking" for. Even though this book is heartbreaking, it still needs to be read! So go get yourself a copy today from amazon HERE and read it to find out what happens to Alice.

Overall: Heartbreaking, emotional, but a great story. This book is realistic and you will be sucked right into Alice's life. You will feel what she feels, think what she thinks, long for what she longs for.

Cover: Its a cool cover. I like the dress and the leaves in the background.

Before I Fall by Lauren Oliver

Release Date: March 2010

Summary: What if you had only one day to live? What would you do? Who would you kiss? And how far would you go to save your own life?

Samantha Kingston has it all—looks, popularity, the perfect boyfriend. Friday, February 12th should be just another day in her charmed life. Instead, it’s her last. The catch: Samantha still wakes up the next morning. In fact, she re-lives the last day of her life seven times, until she realizes that by making even the slightest changes, she may hold more power than she had ever imagined.

My Thoughts: I have never read a book quite like this one! We meet Samantha Kingston who is the ideal girl, popular, has the "cool" friends, the "coolest" boyfriend, the perfect life. Until one day her world all comes crashing down! She gets in a car accident, hears the screeching of the tires, and wam she is back in her bed reliving the day over and over!!! This novel reminds me a little bit of the movie Groundhog Day but also has a lot of differences. This novel is very original. I like the lessons she learns throughout reliving the day over and over again. She has a chance to have fun and not worry about what will happen tomorrow. She has choices to make. She can either do the wrong thing or correct the mistakes she made. She is given her second chance over and over again. I especially liked Kent. I didn't really like her boyfriend but Kent (her guy friend) I definitely liked. I would have liked to see Kent a little bit more, but he is in chapters throughout the book. This novel is one of a kind and you should definitely read it if you get a chance.

Overall: I really loved this one. It is truly an inspiration and interesting novel. If you had the chance, one day to relive, and do anything you wanted, change the wrongs you made, what would you do? Who would you kiss? Who would you talk too? Would you change today?

Cover: I think the cover is really beautiful! Her eyes are the prettiest color!

Girl In The Arena by Lise Haines

I was lucky enough to score an interview with Lise Haines! She is the author of Girl In The Arena which is an awesome book! It was just released in October and I suggest you pick up a copy right now!!

1.What inspired you to write your first book?

Lise: My first novel was In My Sister’s Country. But if it’s okay with you, I’ll talk about Girl in the Arena, my first YA novel. There were a number of things influencing me when I began to write this wild and crazy book. Everything from watching my daughter create an avatar on a gaming site to reflecting on the war in Iraq and where we’re going with our celebrity addiction. Though I didn’t start out with this intention, at some point I realized I was holding up a mirror to something in our culture that couldn’t be ignored. I have a few notes on how GIRL began, some of my daughter’s avatars, and a crack-up video on my website: www.lisehaines.com. I love, by the way, hearing from young readers and writers.

2. What books have most influenced your life most?

Lise: It’s a long list that goes from Alice in Wonderland to To Kill a Mockingbird and The Virgin Suicides. These are books that easily make me say: I wish I had written them.

3. Who is your favorite author and what is it that really strikes you about their work?

Lise: Let me throw two authors out there, because like best friends, I’m fortunate to have more than one. Jane Austen does it for me because of her ability to transport her readers to another time and place, her understanding of human nature and the way her language flows. I really love Tim O’Brien’s work because he reflects our time and he does it by using such great imagery and perfect-pitch irony. And okay, I have to throw Lorrie Moore into the batch as well. She’s one of the great living humorists. I mean any author who could write a novel called, Who Will Run the Frog Hospital… Wait and see, she’s going to win some awards this year.

4. What was the hardest part of writing your book?

Lise: Time, pure and simple. I juggle single/divorced parenting along with teaching full time as Writer in Residence at Emerson College, along with writing books. When you’re a writer and you have that much on your plate, and you’re so passionate about each aspect of your life as I am, you have to produce time out of thin air. The actual writing was a joy and the world of Girl in the Arena was, and still is, very addictive to me

Summary:Lyn is a neo-gladiator’s daughter, through and through. Her mother has made a career out of marrying into the high-profile world of televised blood sport, and the rules of the Gladiator Sports Association are second nature to their family. Always lend ineffable confidence to the gladiator. Remind him constantly of his victories. And most importantly: Never leave the stadium when your father is dying. The rules help the family survive, but rules—and the GSA—can also turn against you. When a gifted young fighter kills Lyn’s seventh father, he also captures Lyn’s dowry bracelet, which means she must marry him... For fans of The Hunger Games and Fight Club, Lise Haines’ debut novel is a mesmerizing look at a world addicted to violence—a modern world that’s disturbingly easy to imagine.

My Thoughts: I honestly didn't know what I thought as I began this book. Usually I don't read these kind of books. I'm more the romance/vampire type of girl. But I liked the premise of this one and wanted to give it a try! We begin to learn all about the gladiator sports association and how their system works. We learn that people fight to the death. We learn there are A LOT of rules. For example, if the opponent touches a person's dowry bracelet he must marry her. The only person allowed to touch it is the father. We start to learn about Lyn's family. Her mother, stepfather, and brother. We get to know her friends, such as Mark. He is really there for Lyn and is an all around good guy. Lyn's seventh step father is up to fight. His opponent ends up picking up Lyn's dowry bracelet so now according to the laws Lyn is his to marry. I won't give you too many other details without ruining the whole plot. This book was fun and enjoyable. But at times I didn't like all the rules. But that is what makes it so special! I loved how Lyn is independent and she wants to be her own person. She doesn't believe in all the rules. I liked the romance aspect of the book as well. I liked the relationship between her and Mark, and the way things progress with her and her stepfather's opponent. I really liked her stepfather also. There was something about him that was very likable. Once I started reading, I couldn't stop! I finished this book in one sitting! This book is filled with some happy times, some rough times, and it even made me tear up a few times. There are deaths, there is love, there is independence. A mixture of everything you could hope for.

Overall: I really liked this one more than I thought I would. Was very interesting an had an interesting take on the gladiator sport. I really liked all the characters and the way things tied together.
Lately I have been lucky to read such good books right after one another!

Cover: I like the cover. I think it fits the book perfectly.

One Year Ago This Week

When I first started my blog, I told you all how much I love Tyler Hilton, I even posted some things about him, but honestly I didn't give you the full details on this day. I just gave you the shortened version so I got on my myspace and grabbed my blog entry for the day I met him. Its been a year this week since I met him. It feels like it was yesterday. I still think about it! I met him on the 19th. If anything this journal entry will make you laugh because I'm such a dork sometimes! haha

My Blog Entry From A Year Ago:
Today is Friday! I am still on a high from the other night! I am going to see Twilight today. From what I heard my hometown is sold out and we did not get it so I am off to another town to see it, hopefully they aren't sold out too less I'm gonna be mad.

I'm still dazed from the other night. I met Tyler Hilton! I met Tyler Hilton! I'm going to be on that high for a while I'm sure! So, figured I would expand a lil before I go see Twilight.

Well, I found out Tuesday night he was going to be here. Jake told me! he was like would it be mean if I knew someone was coming here and didn't tell you. I was like well yeah! and he told me Tyler Hilton, and I screamed!
We were in the truck and I'm sure I blew his eardrums out! haha. I went right home and looked it up, and sure enough! Tyler Hilton in town Wed November 19th, just think I almost missed it! I mean, I had a day notice! So, here I am all excited. I mean come on, the guy was in movies, Walk The Line, Charlie Bartlett. I've liked this guy forever, since the first time I heard his song back in 2004 or so! omg! But seeing him live, omg! And most of all he's in my favorite show ONE TREE HILL! And not just that, but he has literally touched Chad Michael Murray my soulmate! LOL LOL LOL, I mean hell, lets get techinal here, he was in a scene in bed with Chad Michael Murray (a dream) on One Tree Hill! He had his arm around him! OMG! That same arm that touched me touched Chad Michael Murray. Ok, I sound like a nut here but I'm just really happy! LOL LOL LOL LOL There was this guy I used to have math with at SCC, he reminded me of Tyler Hilton, he looked like him, I used to make jokes to him all the time about it.

So, we go to the concert. And I figured it would be packed but Jake said no, I don't think so, he's not that popular. well anyone who has watched One Tree Hill knows him! and our college town is full of chicks who would love to meet a One Tree Hill costar! LOL. I was talking to Jake, and was like not like I'll get close enough to see him let alone meet the guy, yeah right, not in my wildest dreams! I mean, this guy is a movie star ya know. I would have been happy to get a good picture. So we go, and we walk in the room, it was held in the union at the college. It's by Burger King and other places to eat, and its like basically a big cafetaria. Well, we find seats. And of course all the good seats, the ones up front are taken. So we sit a ways away, and the damn speaker is right in my way blocking the microphone where he will be singing! than this guy who has a big head sits right in front of me. So I'm sitten there, trying to see, and waiting for him to come out. Longest 45 minutes of my life I tell ya. than a guy comes in and sits down next to me. He was a reporter I take it from the notes he was taking. The place is packed, I mean there are so many girls there, probably a few hunderd cramped inside this cafetaria.

So I'm looking at the doors just waiting, and waiting, and waiting, and waiting. and Finally I see him start walking in the room! I can still barely see him because I'm so far away from the stage. He starts to sing, and gawd he sounds just as good live as on his cd's. He sung a bunch of songs I knew plus new ones from his new CD. His new ones are so great, I can't wait to buy the CD in the spring. Anyways, the concert lasts about an hour. I get up every so often and get closer to the stage to try and get a few good pics, most of the ones I took have heads in the way or are blurry because I'm so far away. So I'm about 6 feet away from him, and I was thinking to myself I can't believe I'm this close to TYLER HILTON!!! How do you even comprehend being this close to a movie star or someone who was on One Tree Hill ( I am obsessed with OTH if you didn't know)!

So after standing there a few minutes which seemed like seconds really, I went back to my seat, and watched some more. He told everyone to stand up, so I was really screwed there. I'm 5'1 if that, so I could not see anything. LOL!! I ended up walking towards the front of the stage more, I figured what the hell, everyone else was doing it. So, I got in front of the stage, and took a few more pictures, most of the pictures I took, well they turned out bad, because the lighting was horrible. Usually my camera is pretty good but that night, not so much!

So here I am in front of the stage, with girls behind me touching my butt, trying to get pictures too. Everyone was touching eachother bumping into people, etc. So I stood there in front of him watching the concert, the final song, at that point I was probably 4 ft away from him, I mean, hell I thought the 6 feet away was awesome, and 4 ft this time! whoa!!!!

Ok so I go back to my seat, and me and Jake just stood there for a minute waiting on people to leave so we can get out. He says lets take the back way out. well knowing me, I didn't want to leave yet, just in case I get to see him again! LOL. So I want to go out the front (the way he went out) along with every other girl in there! LOL So we slowly make our way out, and theres a little room between the cafetaria and the stairs to leave. We are stuck in that little room with other people waiting for our turn to leave, and Tyler Hilton walks back in and goes through the little room, heading back into the cafe (or cafetaria you could say). omg, by that time, I am by the door to get back in, and he's standing right there, 2 or 3 feet away. OMG! He makes his way back through the cafetaria, and sets up a table on the other side of the room (where we originally were seated, should have stayed there)! J wants to leave I can tell, but I HAVE to stay! So we get in line, I guess he is signing autographs. How awesome!

Well I didn't buy a shirt or picture because there was a line, and I didn't want to stand in line, so I'm standing there without anything to sign.... hmmm. So I figure He can sign my guitar purse I guess. But than a girl selling pictures goes by the line, so I stop her, and get one. YAYAYAYAYA! So I got me a picture of Tyler Hilton for him to sign, omg!

So I wait in line for about a half hour and its finally my turn. OMG! I am so nervous, I feel like I'm going to pass out or throw up! I bet he would have remembed me if I threw up on him right LOL LOL> I gave the girl standing up up there taking pictures my camera.

Well, he shook my hand, yes I touched Tyler Hilton, how awesome is that! and he asked me my name! So he signd my picture, and was like is it spelled C-I-N-D-Y and I was like yes. omg! and he got in the picture with me, and put his arm around me. OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG!!He leaned down into me, he is tall! and I put my arm around him but at first I accidently touched his butt! LOL

And so I have a picture! OMG! I'm such a girl right now I know, but its Tyler HILTON! Well, he is beautiful. OMG!! He has the prettiest eyes ever! and, just pure perfection. whoa. and his voice, whoa. Ok, I met him! So miss Cindy is happy. How could that have even been real? I think I'm still dreaming. It can't be real right. I mean things do not happen to me like this...... I mean the chance he's in Macomb, and the chance I actually met him! It's one thing to go to a concert, but to actually meet a movie star/tv star. WOW! And on top of that a One Tree Hill star. Ok, so what can I say. A Dream Come True!! I'm usually not all fan girly like this but hell its Tyler Hilton! I love you Tyler Hilton! I'm still trying to pinch myself to wake up!

PS Not the best picture of me, but I kind of looked like a strawberry, I was soooo pink! LOL and the video of him at the concert. What can I say? I may be a fangirl once in a while but the point is I just love his music and I admire him for what he does/and who he is.

Life Of Glass

Have you heard of The Life Of Glass by Jillian Cantor yet? I want to win this book, because A. It looks amazing. B. It sounds amazing! and C. I want it so I can feature it on my Tour Blog!!!

Wowzers!

First off, I just wanted to tell everyone that I will be featured on Climbing Rose Of The Wild Rose Press this week on Friday, for the 5 on Friday edition!

Second, I came across this today! For all you New Moon fanatics out there, like myself!

Did you see the jewelry boxes that came out last year? You know those ones, that were $50 dollars! You told yourself that was tooo expensive but ended up buying it anyways!

Here is the $50.00 jewelry box from last year from Hot Topic. I drove 2 hours to get this jewelry box because I don't have a Hot Topic here! haha

And, than amazon came out with one shortly after that I also had to have (hey it was different) but it was only $20.00. Not too shabby. Granted, it wasn't as nice, no drawer.

Well, I was beginning to wonder when Hot Topic would release their New Moon jewelry box. Have not seen one as of yet. Well, I stumbled upon the new jewelry box on Amazon today, and here it is. It is exactly like the one from Hot Topic with a new design (or at least it looks like it) last year. and its only $22! Way cool!

Don't Judge A Girl By Her Cover

by Ally Carter
Summary: When Cammie "The Chameleon" Morgan visits her roommate Macey in Boston, she thinks she's in for an exciting end to her summer break. After all, she's there to watch Macey's father accept the nomination for vice president of the United States. But when you go to the world's best school (for spies), "exciting" and "deadly" are never far apart. Cammie and Macey soon find themselves trapped in a kidnappers' plot, with only their espionage skills to save them.

As her junior year begins, Cammie can't shake the memory of what happened in Boston, and even the Gallagher Academy for Exceptional Young Women doesn't feel like the safe haven it once did. Shocking secrets and old flames seem to lurk around every one of the mansion's corners as Cammie and her friends struggle to answer the questions, Who is after Macey? And how can the Gallagher Girls keep her safe?

Soon Cammie is joining Bex and Liz as Macey's private security team on the campaign trail. The girls must use their spy training at every turn as the stakes are raised, and Cammie gets closer and closer to the shocking truth..

My Thoughts: We are once again introduced to the girls and their adventures! Except this time, there is real danger! They are not so much learning now, they are actually helping their friend out! Macey is in real trouble! Someone wants to hurt her and will do anything to achieve this goal!
I don't want to give too many spoilers for this one! You just need to read it if you haven't. Read the other two first! So, what is the symbol Cammie knows she has seen before? Why does someone want to hurt Macey? I really enjoyed reading this book. But I really wanted to see Zach more. Is he on Cammie's side or is he really working for the enemy? He was always around the corner somewhere but I just felt like I wanted a little more romance between him and Cammie. I wanted more talking, more kissing, and more interaction! The best part of this book was the ending! It made me want to read the next book which does not come out for half a year! I was surprised at the ending. I was not expecting that to happen! I just really hope Zach is around more in the next book!

Overall: Really liked it but wanted more Zach Zach Zach.

Cover: I adore the cover. I adore all the covers! I'm anxious to see the 4th book's cover!

What I'd Give It:

Bought all 3

Beautiful Creatures by Kami and Margaret

Summary:
Ethan Wate is struggling to hide his apathy for his high school "in" crowd in small town Gatlin, South Carolina, until he meets the determinedly "out" Lena Duchannes, the girl of his dreams (literally--she has been in his nightmares for months). What follows is a smart, modern fantasy--a tale of star-crossed lovers and a dark, dangerous secret. Beautiful Creatures is a delicious southern Gothic that charms you from the first page, drawing you into a dark world of magic and mystery until you emerge gasping and blinking, wondering what happened to the last few hours (and how many more you're willing to give up). To tell too much of the plot would spoil the thrill of discovery, and believe me, you will want to uncover the secrets of this richly imagined dark fantasy on your own.

The Ex Games by Jennifer Echols

Summary:

Hayden and Nick used to be a hot item, but their brief affair ended with a highly publicized breakup. Now the two are "just friends," excluding the occasional flirtation.

Hayden calls Nick's bluff and challenges him to a head-to-head boarding contest. Their mutual friends quickly take sides, the girls on Hayden's and the boys on Nick's, making for an all-out battle of the sexes. This friendly competition is bound to get heated -- and they might end up igniting some old flames.
